The scholarship
The BAEA Scholarship Fund helps primary school students in New South Wales meet the cost of their education. Here is what is on offer, who can apply and how recipients are chosen.
What is offered
| Number of scholarships | Up to 2 each year |
|---|---|
| Value | Up to $50,000 per student, depending on funds raised |
| Term | One school year (2027) |
| How it is paid | Directly to the student's school. The family shares the school's fee invoice and BAEA pays the school. No money is paid to families. |
| What it covers | School fees and other education costs invoiced by the school. |
Who can apply
To be eligible for the 2027 round, the student must:
- be enrolled at, or have accepted a place at, a primary school in New South Wales for 2027 (Kindergarten to Year 6);
- be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia;
- use the scholarship for their education at that school; and
- have a complete application lodged by a parent or legal guardian by the closing date (students are under 18, so a parent or guardian applies on their behalf).
How recipients are chosen
Scholarships are awarded on merit and for reasons of equity. Each eligible application is scored by members of BAEA's Fund Management Committee against these criteria:
| Criterion | Weight | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Academic achievement and effort | 25% | Merit |
| Personal qualities: leadership, character, resilience | 20% | Merit |
| Financial need and equity circumstances | 30% | Equity |
| Contribution to school or community | 15% | Merit |
| Commitment to continued study and goals | 10% | Merit |
Each criterion is scored from 0 to 5. A student's cultural background may be considered as part of their contribution to their community, alongside any other community involvement, but is never a requirement.
Panel members declare any personal connection to an applicant and do not score that application. Every family is told the outcome in writing, and feedback is available on request.
Key dates
Conditions for recipients
- The scholarship must be used for the student's education at the school named in the application.
- The family provides the school's invoice so BAEA can pay the school directly.
- If the student does not take up the place or leaves the school, any unpaid amount stays with the fund and may be awarded to another student.
- We may ask for a short update at the end of the year, and, only with your consent, a quote or photo for our records.
How to apply
Applications are made online. You will need details of the student and their school, short written answers about the student, their circumstances and goals, and a copy of the 2027 enrolment confirmation or offer letter. See the application page for a full checklist.
