Frequently asked questions

Do we need to be from a Balkan background to apply?

No. The scholarship is open to students from every background who meet the eligibility criteria. BAEA was founded by members of the Balkan community, but the scholarship is for students across New South Wales.

Which students can apply this year?

Students enrolled at, or with an accepted place at, a primary school in NSW for 2027 (Kindergarten to Year 6), who are Australian citizens or permanent residents. We plan to include secondary students in future years.

Does it matter whether the school is public, Catholic or independent?

No. Any primary school in New South Wales is eligible. The scholarship is paid against the school's own invoice, so it suits any school that charges fees or other education costs.

How much is the scholarship worth?

Up to $50,000 per student for one school year, depending on the funds we have raised. We award up to 2 scholarships each year.

Is the money paid to us?

No. Once you share the school's fee invoice, BAEA pays the school directly.

When can we apply?

Applications open on Thursday 17 December 2026 and close at 11:59pm Sydney time on Sunday 3 January 2027. Families are told the outcome by Friday 15 January 2027.

What do we need to apply?

The student's details, your contact details, short written answers about the student, your circumstances and their goals, and a copy of the 2027 enrolment confirmation or offer letter. A copy of the school's fee invoice or fee schedule is helpful but optional at this stage. See the application page for the full checklist.

Do we need to send a passport or birth certificate?

Not when you apply. You confirm the student's citizenship or residency in the form. If your application is shortlisted, we will ask for evidence through a secure link.

Who decides?

Members of BAEA's Fund Management Committee score each application independently against the published criteria, then agree the outcome. Anyone with a personal connection to an applicant does not take part in that decision.

Can I donate to the fund?

We are setting up donations now. The Balkan Australian Education Alliance Scholarship Fund has applied to the ATO for endorsement as a deductible gift recipient, so donations are not yet tax-deductible. Contact us if you would like to support the fund.
